Christmas Lights On A Fence: Ideas For Rails, Posts, And Gates

A rustic split-rail fence crossing a snowy field at night, its rails wrapped in warm white LED Christmas lights and its posts topped with evergreen swags, with a lit oak tree and a red barn in the distance

A fence is one of the most overlooked places to put Christmas lights. It frames your whole yard, it sits right where people walk and drive past, and it gives your display a clean edge that ties the house, trees, and lawn together. A glowing fence line also makes even a modest display look finished.

The trick is matching the lights and the attachment method to the fence you actually have. Here is how to plan Christmas lights on a fence, with ideas for top rails, posts, gates, and the ground along the fence line.

Start With Your Fence Type

Every fence style suggests a different lighting approach.

  • Picket fences: the top rail is a natural line for C7 or C9 bulbs, and the posts are easy to wrap. This is the classic Christmas card look.
  • Split-rail fences: the rails themselves are the design. Wrap each rail with light strings so the fence reads as glowing lines across the yard.
  • Privacy fences: a tall, solid face works like a wall. Run a line of bulbs or rope light along the top and let icicle lights hang down the face.
  • Wrought iron and aluminum fences: the open pickets look elegant with light strings woven along the top rail and posts wrapped tightly.
  • Vinyl fences: you will want to avoid drilling. Our guide to attaching string lights to a vinyl fence covers damage-free methods.

Before you buy anything, measure the fence in feet, count the posts and gates, and note where the nearest outdoor outlet is. Those three numbers drive every decision below.

Idea 1: A Line Of C9 Bulbs Along The Top Rail

The cleanest fence look is a straight line of large bulbs running the length of the top rail. Use a 25' C9 stringer with 12" spacing, which has 25 E17 sockets, 18 AWG SPT1 wire, and male and female plugs so you can connect runs end to end. Longer fences can use 50' and 100' stringers from our C9 stringer collection. Choose white wire for a white picket fence and green wire for wood or dark metal so the cord disappears.

Screw in C9 Warm White Faceted ProCore® LED Christmas Light Bulbs for a timeless look, or C9 Multicolor Faceted ProCore® LED Christmas Light Bulbs for a nostalgic one. Both use an E17 intermediate base, draw just 0.84 watts per bulb, and are dimmable. Plan one bulb per foot of fence. A 100 foot fence line takes four 25 packs and draws about 84 watts.

To hold the stringer, the C-Clip for C7 and C9 cordsets is made for flat surfaces where gutter and shingle clips do not work, including fences. Each clip mounts with screws or construction adhesive and holds the socket in place, so your bulbs stand in a straight, even row. If you would rather not fasten anything to the fence, outdoor-rated zip ties around the rail work on many wood and metal fences.

Idea 2: Smaller C7 Bulbs For Picket Fences And Gates

On a short picket fence or a garden gate, C9s can feel oversized. C7 bulbs are smaller and keep the scale right. Use a 25' C7 stringer with 12" spacing (25 E12 sockets, male and female plugs) with C7 Warm White Faceted ProCore® LED Christmas Light Bulbs, which draw 0.8 watts per bulb and are dimmable. Browse more stringer lengths in our C7 stringer collection.

Outline the gate on its own so it reads as the entrance. Run bulbs up one side of the gate frame, across the top, and down the other side, the same way you would outline a window or door. A lit gate tells visitors exactly where to walk.

Idea 3: Wrap Split Rails And Posts With Light Strings

For split-rail fences, wrought iron, and fence posts, light strings give you a softer glow than bulbs. The 70 5mm Warm White DreamSpark® Slow Fade LED Christmas Lights cover 23 feet of lit length on 4" spacing and connect up to 45 strings end to end. Each light fades slowly and randomly, so a wrapped fence shimmers gently instead of sitting perfectly still. For a steady glow, choose any color from our 5mm LED Christmas lights collection.

  • Rails: spiral the string around each rail with even spacing between wraps, about 4" to 6" apart. Keep the spacing consistent from rail to rail so the fence reads as one design.
  • Posts: wrap posts tightly from the bottom up. Wrapped posts every 6 or 8 feet add rhythm to a long fence, even if the rails between them stay dark.
  • Wrought iron: weave the string along the top rail and wrap the posts. Green wire disappears against black metal at night.

Idea 4: Icicle Lights Hanging From A Privacy Fence

A tall privacy fence is a blank canvas. Icicle lights hanging from the top edge turn it into a glowing curtain. The 70 M5 Warm White LED Icicle Lights have 6.5 feet of lit length with drops of 10, 16.5, and 19.5 inches, spaced 6 inches apart, and connect up to 43 sets end to end. For a gentle shimmer, the 70 M5 Warm White DreamSpark® Slow Fade LED Icicle Lights share the same drop lengths. Our creative uses for icicle lights article has more ideas beyond the roofline.

Idea 5: Rope Light For A Continuous Line

If you want one unbroken line of light rather than individual points, rope light is a strong choice for fence rails. Our 150' LED rope light spools are 1/2" in diameter, rated IP65, cut every 36 inches for a custom fit, draw 0.8 watts per foot, and include 50 mounting clips. Find every color in our Christmas rope light collection, and read our Christmas rope lights buying guide before you cut.

Idea 6: Light The Ground Along The Fence Line

Lights at the base of a fence add depth and make the fence line glow from the ground up. Push 5" Lawn Speed Stakes into the soil along the fence, seat the sockets of a C7 or C9 stringer in them, and add bulbs. The stakes are made of glass-filled nylon, hold the socket upright, and come in packs of 25. Our guide to C7 and C9 pathway lights covers stake spacing.

Planting beds along the fence are worth lighting too. Drape net lights over shrubs in front of the fence for an even, layered glow.

Three Fence Plans To Adapt

  • Classic white picket: warm white C7 bulbs on white wire along the top rail, the gate outlined in the same bulbs, and posts at the gate wrapped in warm white 5mm lights.
  • Country split rail: every rail wrapped in warm white DreamSpark® strings, a nearby tree wrapped to match, and nothing else. Simple and striking from the road.
  • Backyard privacy fence: a line of multicolor C9s along the top edge with icicle lights hanging below, plus net-lit shrubs at the base.

Power, Timing, And Weather

Fences are often far from an outlet, so plan the power route before you hang anything.

  • Start at the outlet. Begin your run at the end of the fence closest to power so the male plug is where you need it.
  • Keep connections off the ground. Point plug junctions down, add a drip loop, and lift them off wet soil. Do not tape connections; tape traps moisture inside.
  • Automate it. The 2 Outlet 15 Amp Outdoor Photocell Timer turns lights on at dusk and off after 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours, with two grounded outlets and a 15 amp, 1875 watt maximum load.

Questions & Answers

How do I attach Christmas lights to a fence?

For C7 and C9 stringers on flat fence boards, the C-Clip for C7 and C9 cordsets mounts with screws or construction adhesive and holds each socket in place. If you prefer not to fasten anything to the fence, outdoor-rated zip ties around the rail work on many wood and metal fences.

What are the best Christmas lights for a fence?

C9 or C7 bulbs on a 12 inch spacing stringer give a clean line along the top rail. Light strings are best for wrapping split rails and posts, and icicle lights work well hanging from a tall privacy fence.

How many C9 bulbs do I need for my fence?

Plan one bulb per foot of fence on 12 inch spacing stringers. A 100 foot fence takes four 25 packs of bulbs and draws about 84 watts with our 0.84 watt C9 ProCore® LED bulbs.

Should I use C7 or C9 bulbs on a picket fence?

On a short picket fence or garden gate, C7 bulbs keep the scale right. C9 bulbs suit longer, taller fences that are viewed from the street.

How do I light a split-rail fence?

Spiral light strings around each rail with even spacing between wraps, about 4 to 6 inches apart. Our 70 5mm Warm White DreamSpark® strings cover 23 feet of lit length and connect up to 45 strings end to end.

How do I power Christmas lights on a fence far from an outlet?

Start your run at the end of the fence closest to power, keep plug connections off the ground with drip loops, and use an outdoor photocell timer so the lights turn on at dusk automatically.
