SPT-1 and SPT-2 Zipcord Wire

SPT wire is two-conductor zipcord, the same flat lamp cord used on most Christmas light extension cords. Buying it on a spool lets you build your own cords at the exact length each part of your display needs, so you're not coiling up extra extension cord behind the bushes or stretching one that's too short. Professional holiday lighting installers work this way because it keeps every run neat and uncluttered.

Every spool has PVC insulation, a ribbed conductor for polarity identification, a 300V AC working voltage and a 105°C temperature rating, and is UL Listed.

SPT-1 vs SPT-2: What's the Difference?

Both are 18 AWG and carry the same 10 amp rating. The only difference is the thickness of the insulation. SPT-1 is the standard choice for most Christmas light work: lightweight, flexible and easy to route along a roofline or through landscaping. SPT-2 has a thicker jacket for extra durability where the cord is more likely to be stepped on, dragged or rubbed.

The most important rule: your plugs and sockets must match your wire type. SPT-1 plugs are sized for SPT-1 insulation and SPT-2 plugs for SPT-2. A mismatched plug won't make a reliable connection.

What You Can Build

Custom extension cords. Cut the wire to length and press on slide-on vampire plugs: a male plug at the start of the run and a female plug at the end. Female inline pass-through plugs can be added anywhere along the cord to create extra outlets. Plugs are sold separately, in SPT-1 and SPT-2 versions, in packs and male/female bundles.

Custom C7 and C9 stringers. Add replacement C7 and C9 sockets (SPT-1, plus C9 sockets in SPT-2) at any spacing you like to build a socket run that fits your roofline exactly. For long, standard-spacing runs, our C7/C9 stringers are ready to go.

Tips for a Safe, Dry Installation

Seat every plug fully, keep connections off the ground, and point them down so water drains away. Skip the electrical tape: it traps moisture inside the connection. Weatherproof plug covers with gaskets and SPT-1 termination caps in our moisture protection collection help keep connections dry.

What is the difference between SPT-1 and SPT-2 wire?

Is SPT-2 a heavier gauge than SPT-1?

No. Both of our SPT wires are 18 AWG. SPT-2 is thicker on the outside because of its heavier insulation, not because the copper conductors are larger.

Which plugs and sockets work with this wire?

Match the plug or socket to the wire type. Use SPT-1 slide-on vampire plugs and sockets on SPT-1 wire, and SPT-2 plugs and sockets on SPT-2 wire. We carry SPT-1 and SPT-2 male, female and female inline pass-through plugs, SPT-1 splicer plugs, C7 and C9 SPT-1 sockets and C9 SPT-2 sockets.

How do I make my own Christmas light extension cord?

Cut the zipcord to the length you need, press a male slide-on plug onto the start of the run and a female plug onto the end. Vampire plugs pierce the insulation when closed, so there is no wire stripping. Add female inline pass-through plugs along the cord if you need more outlets.

Is SPT wire rated for outdoor use?

Yes. Our SPT-1 and SPT-2 zipcord is rated for indoor and outdoor use and is UL Listed. Keep plug connections off the ground and pointed down so water drains away from them.

What lengths and colors does the wire come in?

SPT-1 comes on 250 foot and 500 foot spools in green or white wire. SPT-2 comes on 250 foot and 500 foot spools in green. Choose green for landscaping and trees and white for white trim and gutters.
