Green Christmas Lights: Ideas From Classic Red And Green To All-Green

Green Christmas lights are the color most people underestimate. A single strand of green can disappear into a pine tree, but use it with a plan and green becomes the richest color in your display: emerald trunks glowing against the night sky, hedges that look lit from within, and the classic red and green pairing that says Christmas before anyone reaches the front door.
Here is how to design with green, from traditional red and green to all-green looks, with the products to build each idea. Everything mentioned here lives in our green Christmas lights collection.
Put Green Where It Can Contrast
The one rule that matters most with green: give it something to stand out against. Green lights on dense green foliage look muted from the street. Green on bare branches, white or brick walls, dark rooflines, or snow looks vivid.
- Bare deciduous trees like oaks, maples, and crape myrtles are perfect for green. Wrap the trunk and main limbs and the whole tree reads as a glowing green sculpture.
- Evergreens work when you pair green with a second color, or when you light them densely enough that the tree glows rather than sparkles.
- Light-colored siding and trim make a green roofline pop. On dark siding, pair green with red or cool white so the outline stays crisp.
Idea 1: The Classic Red And Green Roofline
Alternating red and green C9s along a roofline is pure tradition, and screw-in bulbs let you set the pattern bulb by bulb. Combine C9 Red Faceted ProCore® LED Christmas Light Bulbs with C9 Green Faceted ProCore® LED Christmas Light Bulbs on a 25' C9 stringer with 12" spacing. Both bulbs use an E17 intermediate base, draw 0.84 watts each, and are dimmable.
Try a simple red, green, red, green pattern, or go red, red, green for a warmer read from the street. Our C9 roofline patterns guide has more layouts. For windows and doors, step down to C7 Green Faceted ProCore® bulbs (E12 base, 0.8 watts) on a 25' C7 stringer, paired with red C7s to match the roofline. See how to outline windows and doors for the method.
Idea 2: An Emerald Tree Sculpture
Pick your best bare tree and wrap it entirely in green. Wrap the trunk tightly, then run lights out along each main limb. The 100 5mm Green LED Christmas Lights cover 33 feet of lit length at 4" spacing, draw 6.9 watts, and connect up to 27 strings end to end. For the softer look of a traditional mini light, the 70 M5 Green LED Christmas Lights cover 23 feet and connect up to 45 strings.
Green wire disappears against bark, so the tree looks like it glows on its own. Our tree wrapping guide covers spacing between wraps and how to plan strings per trunk.
Idea 3: Red And Green Trees And Garland
For evergreens, garland, and wreaths, a string that already mixes both colors saves you from wrapping twice. The 70 5mm Red and Green LED Christmas Lights pair rich red with deep green, cover 23 feet of lit length at 4" spacing, and connect up to 45 strings end to end.
Want it to feel alive? The 70 5mm Red and Green DreamSpark® Slow Fade LED Christmas Lights fade each light in and out at its own pace, so a tree seems to breathe in red and green. Use one or two DreamSpark® trees in a yard of steady lights for the best effect.
Idea 4: Hedges That Glow Red And Green
Net lights are the fastest way to light shrubs and hedges evenly. Every 4' x 6' net below holds 100 5mm lights on a 6" x 4" grid with green wire, and up to 18 nets connect end to end.
- 4' x 6' Red, Green LED Net Lights mix both colors in one net.
- 4' x 6' Green LED Net Lights give a solid green glow.
- 4' x 6' Green DreamSpark® Smooth Fade LED Net Lights fade gently, light by light.
A favorite layout: alternate solid green shrubs with red and green shrubs along the foundation, or put the mixed nets on a front hedge and solid green on the shrubs behind it for depth. Our guide to lighting bushes and shrubs covers draping and sizing.
Idea 5: Add Green Sparkle
Strobe lights are extremely flashy, which is exactly why one strobe feature can be the showstopper of a display.
- C9 Green SuperSpark® LED Strobe Christmas Light Bulbs screw into any C9 stringer and flash at 40 to 180 flashes per minute. Mix a few into a green or red and green C9 tree drape or roofline for bursts of light. They are not dimmable.
- The 50 5mm Green SuperSpark® LED Strobe Lights make every light strobe rapidly and randomly, like tiny camera flashes in green.
- The 50 5mm Red, Green, and Cool White SuperSpark® LED Strobe Lights bring all three classic colors to one strobing string.
Both strobe strings cover 24.5 feet of lit length at 6" spacing and connect up to 45 strings end to end. Put strobes on one tree, wreath, or doorway rather than everywhere. Our SuperSpark®, QuadSpark®, and DreamSpark® guide explains each effect.
Idea 6: Green In A ColorCraft® Palette
If you want green with a twist, our ColorCraft® strings blend it with other colors in one strand:
- ColorCraft® Humbug pairs zesty lime green with bold red for a playful, slightly mischievous take on the classic.
- ColorCraft® Christmas blends cool white, green, and red, the traditional palette in one string.
- ColorCraft® Winter mixes warm white, cool white, and deep green for an understated, natural look on trees, wreaths, and indoor displays.
Each is a 50 light 5mm string on 6" spacing with 24.5 feet of lit length. Browse every blend in our ColorCraft® collection.
Green And White
Not every green display needs red. Green paired with cool white feels fresh and wintry, like evergreens under frost: outline the roofline in cool white C9s, wrap the trees in green, and let the two colors trade places on the shrubs. Green with warm white reads softer and more natural, closer to candlelight in a pine forest. Pick one white and keep it consistent everywhere, and see our cool white Christmas light ideas for the white half of the plan.
Three Plans To Adapt
Traditional Red And Green
Red and green C9 roofline, red and green C7 windows, evergreens wrapped in 70 5mm Red and Green strings, and red and green nets on the shrubs. Simple, balanced, and timeless.
Emerald Night
A solid green C9 roofline, one large bare tree wrapped in 100 5mm Green, solid green nets on the hedges, and a few C9 Green SuperSpark® strobes worked into the roofline for sparkle.
Playful Lime And Red
ColorCraft® Humbug on porch railings, garland, and the front door wreath, red C9s on the roofline, and green DreamSpark® nets on the shrubs for a slow, living glow.
Power And Timing Tips
LED keeps green displays light on power. Most of the strings and nets above draw under 7 watts per set, except our 4' x 6' steady green and green DreamSpark® nets at 12 watts, so check the maximum end-to-end number on each product page and never exceed it. Add an outdoor photocell timer so everything turns on at dusk and off on schedule. For more color pairing ideas, see our Christmas light color combinations and the red Christmas lights buying guide.
