Roofline Christmas Lights: How To Choose Bulbs, Stringers, Clips, And Kits

The roofline is the first thing people see when they look at your home after dark. A straight, evenly spaced line of bulbs along the eaves and gables makes the whole display look professional, and a crooked or patchy one is hard to hide behind anything else in the yard.
The good news is that the best roofline lights are not complicated. Nearly every great roofline comes down to four choices: the bulb, the stringer it screws into, the clip that holds it to your roof, and how you power it. This guide walks through each one so you can order the right parts the first time. Everything here is in our best Christmas lights for rooflines collection.
Why C9 Bulbs Are The Roofline Standard
Look at the homes and businesses with the cleanest rooflines on any street and most of them are lit with C9 bulbs. A C9 is a large, screw-in bulb with a 1.18" diameter, big enough to read clearly from the street and spaced evenly on a socket stringer so every bulb lines up.
Our C9 bulbs are ProCore® LED bulbs with a polycarbonate lens, an E17 intermediate base, and a draw of just 0.84 watts per bulb. They are dimmable, IP67 rated, UL Listed, and backed by our 3-Season Reindeer Proof™ Warranty. Because each bulb screws in on its own, you can run a single color, build a pattern, or swap colors next year without buying new wire.
- C9 Warm White Faceted ProCore® LED Christmas Light Bulbs are the classic choice. Warm white is 3000K, and the faceted lens scatters light into sharp, sparkling points that look bright from the curb.
- C9 Warm White Smooth ProCore® LED Christmas Light Bulbs give each bulb an even, glowing look for a softer finish.
- C9 Multicolor Faceted ProCore® LED Christmas Light Bulbs bring the nostalgic multicolor roofline in the same pack of 25.
Every color and lens finish lives in our C9 LED Christmas light bulbs collection. If you are still choosing a finish, our C9 LED replacement bulbs guide compares smooth and faceted lenses side by side.
When C7 Bulbs Make More Sense
C7 bulbs are smaller (7/8" diameter with an E12 base) and draw 0.8 watts per bulb. They are best known for outlining windows and doors and for wrapping trees, but they also suit a roofline that is low, short, or viewed up close, such as a cottage or a single-story home set near the sidewalk. On a two-story house or a home set far back from the street, C9 bulbs hold their presence better.
If you go with C7, C7 Warm White Faceted ProCore® LED Christmas Light Bulbs screw into a 25' C7 stringer with 25 sockets on 12" spacing. Our roofline Christmas lights planner goes deeper on picking the right scale for your home.
Choose Your Stringers
A stringer is the socket wire your bulbs screw into. For rooflines, 12" spacing is the most common choice and makes ordering easy: one bulb per foot of roofline.
- C9 stringer, 25', 25 sockets, 12" spacing, green wire: pre-cut, ready to use, with male and female plugs so you can connect stringers end to end. 18 AWG SPT1 wire with a fused male plug.
- C9 stringer, 50', 50 sockets, 12" spacing, green wire: fewer connections on longer, uninterrupted eaves.
- C9 stringer, 100', 100 sockets, 12" spacing, green wire: one long run with a male plug only, so it works as a single circuit rather than a link in a chain.
Pick green wire for dark shingles and gutters, or white wire if your trim and fascia are white. See every length and wire color in our C9 Christmas light stringers collection. Stringers ship without bulbs, so plan one 25 pack of bulbs for every 25 sockets.
Match The Clip To Your Roof
The clip is the part most people underthink, and it is the part that decides whether your line stays straight through wind and snow. Choose by where the lights mount:
- Gutters and shingles: the TuffClips Wedge Clip for C9, pack of 100 has a double-beveled wedge point that slides between shingles, and it also grips gutters. Its Flex-Over-Bulb design clips over bulbs already seated in the sockets, so you can bulb your stringers before you climb. It comes in white and in black, which blends with dark shingles and trim.
- Shingle edge, bulbs facing out: the TuffClips Tuff Tab shingle tab clip, pack of 50 holds C7 or C9 sockets so the bulb faces outward from the shingle edge. It is the clip commercial installation crews prefer on shingle rooflines.
- Flat roofs and commercial buildings: the Shingle Speed Tab roof adapter, pack of 50 glues or screws to a flat surface and accepts a standard shingle tab clip on top.
- Metal roofs and flashing: magnetic clips for C9 sockets, pack of 50 hold by magnetic force with no screws or adhesive. They are designed for SPT1 wire.
Plan one clip per socket. Our Christmas light clips buying guide covers every clip we carry, and the full range is in our Christmas light clips collection.
The Shortcut: Roofline Bundles
If you would rather not build a parts list, our roofline bundles put everything for a warm white faceted C9 roofline in one order.
- The Roofline Bundle for up to 100 linear feet includes 100 warm white faceted C9 bulbs, 100 feet of green C9 socket wire with sockets on 12" spacing, 100 All Application Omni Clips, a 250' roll of green SPT1 wire with 25 male and 25 female SPT1 plugs, and a photocell timer with 2 outlets.
- The Roofline Bundle for up to 250 linear feet scales that up to 250 bulbs, 250 feet of socket wire, and 300 clips, with the same SPT1 wire roll, plugs, and photocell timer.
The SPT1 wire and plugs let you build your own jumper cords to bridge gaps between roof sections and your own extensions back to the outlet, so the only wire on the roof is wire you need.
Adding Icicle Lights Or Sparkle
Some rooflines get a second layer. Icicle lights hang below the gutter line for a frosted look, and a C9 bulb line above them keeps the edge crisp.
- 70 M5 Warm White LED Icicle Lights cover 6.5 feet of lit length with drops of 10", 16.5", and 19.5" spaced 6" apart on white wire. Each set draws 4.8 watts, and up to 43 sets connect end to end.
- 70 M5 Warm White DreamSpark® Slow Fade LED Icicle Lights have the same layout, with each light fading slowly and randomly for a gentle shimmer.
- 70 M5 Multicolor DreamSpark® Slow Fade LED Icicle Lights pair naturally with a multicolor C9 roofline.
For true sparkle, a few SuperSpark® C9 strobe bulbs screwed in among steady bulbs flash brightly against the line. Strobes are extremely flashy, so use them sparingly. Our LED icicle lights buying guide covers icicle options in detail.
How Much To Order
- Measure every run you plan to light in feet: eaves, rakes, and peaks. Measure along the actual edge, not across the yard.
- Bulbs: on 12" spacing, plan one bulb per foot. A 100 foot roofline takes four 25 packs.
- Stringers: add up your runs and choose lengths that fit each section with as few connections as possible.
- Clips: one per socket, plus a few spares.
- Power: LED makes this easy. A 100 foot C9 roofline draws about 84 watts. Check the fuse rating on your stringers and plan runs that start near an outdoor outlet.
A 2 Outlet 15 Amp Outdoor Photocell Timer turns the roofline on at dusk and off after 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours, so you never have to think about it. Before you climb, read our roofline Christmas light safety basics and our step-by-step roofline installation guide.
