How To Choose, Light, And Mount A Star Tree Topper On A Mega Tree

A mega tree without a star looks unfinished from the street. The drops of light run up to a point and then simply stop, and the eye keeps looking for something that is not there. A lit star at the apex gives the whole cone a destination. It is the smallest part of a mega tree build and the part people point at.

It is also the part that gets left to the last minute, which is how people end up with a star that is too small to read, lit in a color that fights the tree, or with no way to attach it to the pole. This guide walks through the decisions in the order you should make them: flat or 3D, what size, how to light it, how it mounts, and how to power it. What A Mega Tree Star Topper Is

The star toppers in our Mega/Pole Tree Kits and Accessories collection are powder-coated steel frames built for mega tree hook head systems and pole tree displays. Each one has a 1/2 inch pipe thread nipple welded to its base, which threads into a star mount adaptor at the top of the tree.

Two things surprise people. First, the stars are frames only. Lighting is not included, so you choose the lights and how they attach. Second, the finish is powder-coated steel, which is rust-resistant and made to sit at the top of a pole outdoors all decorating season.

Step 1: Choose Flat Or 3D

This is the first decision because it depends on where your tree is seen from, not on how tall it is.

Flat Stars Face One Direction

A flat star is a single outline. From the front it is a crisp, bright shape. From the side it thins to a line. That is perfectly fine for most front-yard trees, where nearly everyone sees the tree from the street or the driveway. Turn the star to face the main viewing direction before you raise the tree and it will read well all decorating season.

3D Stars Read From Every Side

The 12" 3D Star Tree Topper is three 12 inch steel stars assembled together into one three-dimensional shape that is visible from all sides. Choose it when the tree will be seen from more than one direction: a corner lot, a tree in the middle of a yard or a courtyard, a tree beside a driveway that people approach from both ways, or a commercial setting where visitors walk around it. Keep in mind that a 3D star has three outlines to light, one per panel.

Step 2: Choose The Size

Flat stars come in three sizes, and the perimeter of each is listed on the product page, which is the number you need when you plan the lighting:

• 12" Star Tree Topper: 48 1/8 inch perimeter
• 18" Star Tree Topper: 72 inch perimeter
• 24" Star Tree Topper: 96 1/4 inch perimeter

The right size depends on two things: how tall the tree is and how far away people will be when they see it. A star sits at the top of the tree, which is the point farthest from every viewer, so it always looks smaller in place than it does on the workbench. The common mistake is going too small.

Use the viewing distance as your guide. A shorter pole tree near a porch or walkway, where people see it up close, is well served by a 12 inch star. A mid-height tree in a typical front yard is where the 18 inch star makes sense. For taller trees, trees set well back from the street, or trees viewed from across a road or parking lot, the 24 inch star gives the apex enough presence to register from a distance. If you are torn between two sizes on a tall tree, the larger one is almost always the right call.

One easy check: once your tree is up, stand where most people will see it and hold the star frame at arm's length toward the top of the pole. If the shape is hard to make out against the tree, go up a size.

Step 3: Light The Star

Because the frames are sold without lights, the lighting is where you make the star your own.

Matching M5 Light Kits

For the 12 inch and 18 inch flat stars there are pre-sized M5 cool white LED light kits. Each string is on 2 inch centers and sized to the perimeter of its star, which gives even coverage around the outline with little wasted wire:

Both kits include zip ties and wireframe clips for attaching the string to the frame. They have stackable, polarized male and female plugs, a fused male plug, 22 AWG green wire, sealed single-molded sockets, and they are UL Listed, indoor/outdoor rated, and dimmable. Each kit carries a 1-season warranty.

Lighting The 24" And 3D Stars

For the 24 inch flat star and the 3D star, use the lighting of your choice. The goal is the same as the kits: close spacing so the outline reads as one solid line of light rather than a row of dots. Close-spaced M5 or 5mm strings in the same color family as your tree are the simple option, and our Christmas Tree Lights collection is a good place to compare lens styles and spacing. On a 3D star, light all three panels the same way so the shape stays even from every side.

Pick A Color With Intent

The matching kits are cool white, 6400K. A cool white star is the classic finish on a cool white or multicolor tree, and it stands out clearly against a colored tree because it is the brightest, whitest point on the cone. On a warm white tree, a cool white star reads as a deliberate contrast. If you want the star to blend with a warm white tree instead, light the 24 inch or 3D frame with warm white strings to match.

How To Attach The Lights

1. Lay the frame flat on a clean surface before it goes anywhere near the pole.
2. Start the string at the bottom of the star, near the mounting nipple, so the plug ends up where the power will come from.
3. Trace the perimeter, keeping the lights facing outward toward the viewer.
4. Secure the wire with the wireframe clips and zip ties at every point and every inside corner, where the string wants to pull away.
5. Finish back at the base and leave the plug end hanging down toward the mount.
6. Plug it in and check every light on the ground. Fixing a dark section at the top of a pole is a much bigger job.

Step 4: Mount The Star

This is where planning pays off, because the right mounting part depends on the hook head you use.

• Mega Tree Kit (up to 20 feet tall): includes a star mount bushing for attaching a star topper to the top of the tree, along with the 24-peg crank-up hook head, guy wires, pulleys, and base plate.
• Screw-on hook heads: the screw-on style hook heads include a star mount adaptor, a 1.5 inch to 1/2 inch threaded bushing that lets the star thread directly onto the hook head.
• Crank-up hook heads bought on their own: the star mount adaptor is not included. You will need the Guy Wire Adaptor Kit, which mounts at the top of the pole and includes the star mount adaptor.

All of our mega tree components are designed for 1.5 inch rigid threaded electrical conduit and its couplings. They will not work with EMT conduit or plumbing couplings, and a star mount is no exception. Check this before you buy pipe.

Mount the star while the pole and hardware are still within reach, and set its facing direction at the same time. A flat star should face the main viewing direction. Once the tree is standing, turning the star is not a quick adjustment.

The star also adds surface area to the very top of the pole, which is where wind has the most leverage. Your guy wires are what hold the tree steady, so set them as described in our mega tree kit guide and check them after the first windy night.

Step 5: Power The Star

Run the star's lead down the pole alongside the drops, fastened to the pole so it does not flap in the wind, and bring it to the same power point as the rest of the tree. Keep plugs off the ground and pointed down, leave a drip loop before each connection, and protect connections with a weatherproof plug gasket rather than tape, which traps moisture. Put the star on the same timer as the tree so it never comes on late or stays on alone. A Quick Planning Checklist

• Where is the tree seen from? One direction: flat star. Several: 3D star.
• How far away is the viewer? The farther and taller, the bigger the star.
• Lights: a matching M5 kit for the 12 inch or 18 inch star, or close-spaced strings of your choice for the 24 inch and 3D stars.
• Mounting: star mount bushing in the Mega Tree Kit, adaptor included on screw-on hook heads, Guy Wire Adaptor Kit for a stand-alone crank-up hook head.
• Pipe: 1.5 inch rigid threaded electrical conduit only.
• Power: lead down the pole, same timer as the tree, connections protected.
