How to Choose Opaque LED Christmas Light Bulbs

Opaque — also called smooth lens — is the traditional Christmas bulb look: the lens diffuses the LED into a solid, even color with no sparkle and no visible point of light inside. If you grew up with painted ceramic C9s on the roofline, this is that look with LED efficiency and durability.

Choose opaque when you want color to read as a clean, continuous line — rooflines and outlines in C9, windows, doorways, and wrapped trees in C7. Choose faceted instead when you want the light to sparkle and refract. Both finishes use the same ProCore® polycarbonate lens construction and fit standard sockets.

Twinkle versions add a random sparkle to the smooth lens, and ColorCraft® smooth palettes (Blue Taffy, Pink Taffy, Cotton Candy) bring curated multi-color combinations to the opaque look. Every product here is backed by our Reindeer Proof™ Warranty.

What does opaque mean on an LED Christmas bulb?

The lens is smooth and diffusing rather than clear or faceted, so the bulb glows as one solid, even color with no visible diode inside — the classic ceramic-bulb look.

What is the difference between opaque and faceted bulbs?

Opaque (smooth) lenses diffuse light into an even glow; faceted lenses refract it for sparkle. It is purely a matter of the look you want — construction and fit are otherwise the same.

Should I use C7 or C9 opaque bulbs?

C9 is the standard for rooflines, ridgelines, and large outlines. C7 suits windows, doorways, and wrapped trees where a slightly smaller bulb fits the scale better.

Do opaque ProCore® bulbs fit standard sockets?

Yes — C7 bulbs use the standard E12 base and C9 bulbs the standard E17 base, so they screw into any standard stringer or socket line.
