Copper, Insulation, And The Parts You Cannot See
Inside the wire, the differences continue. Professional-grade strings run copper conductors rather than the copper-alloy blends common in bargain lights, and the PVC insulation around them is a higher-quality compound that stays flexible instead of cracking after time outdoors. None of this is visible on a shelf, which is exactly why cheap lights get away with it — the wire looks the same in the package and behaves very differently in year three.
One thing that is not the difference, despite the folklore: wire gauge. Bargain strings and professional strings both typically run about 22 AWG. The quality lives in the materials and the construction, not in the thickness.
Brightness That Comes From The Chip
Put a professional-grade string next to a bargain string at dusk and the difference is immediate: high-output SMD chips versus low-output diodes. The pro string is visibly brighter and holds truer color. That matters most exactly where lights earn their keep — from the street, at distance, on a cold clear night.
