Commercial Christmas Lights: How To Specify And Order

Commercial Christmas lighting is a different purchase from residential decorating, and the difference is not the size of the order. It is the service conditions. A shopping center, a municipal square, a hotel entrance, or an HOA entry monument runs its display longer hours, in a more exposed location, with more people looking at it and less tolerance for a dark section. The product has to survive that, and a buyer's job is to specify accordingly.

This guide covers what actually changes when you buy for a commercial property: the specs that matter, how to size an order, what to standardize, and how to plan the timeline. What "Commercial Grade" Actually Means

The phrase gets used loosely, so it is worth being specific about which construction details separate a set built for service from a set built for a season on a suburban porch.

  • PVC insulation. Commercial-grade sets use PVC wire insulation rather than the cheaper compounds found in mass-market sets. It handles UV exposure and cold flexing better, which matters when the same run gets pulled off a roofline and reinstalled next year.
  • Copper conductors. Serious sets use copper rather than copper-alloy conductors. Alloy is cheaper and measurably worse at carrying current over long runs.
  • Single-molded bulbs. A single-molded bulb is one sealed piece rather than a lens glued to a base. Water gets into seams; there is no seam to get into.
  • Polycarbonate lenses. Polycarbonate resists impact and UV yellowing in ways that thinner plastics do not. On a property where a display sits at eye level near a walkway, this is not a small detail.
  • High-output SMD chips. ProCore® C9 bulbs use high-output SMD chips, which is what lets a commercial installation hold brightness across a long span rather than fading toward the end of a run.

Choose Your Bulb Style By Viewing Distance

The most common commercial mistake is specifying a residential bulb size for a building that is viewed from a parking lot.

C9 is the workhorse for commercial rooflines and long architectural spans. It is the larger of the two traditional shapes, with an E17 base, and it holds its shape visually from across a street or a lot. Spacing of twelve to fifteen inches reads well on a roofline; on a very long commercial run, staying at the wider end keeps the bulb count and the power draw manageable without losing the line.

C7 uses the smaller E12 base and suits closer-viewed areas: entry canopies, columns, railings, storefront trim, and anywhere the viewer is on foot rather than in a car. It also works well on greenery, where tighter spacing is the norm.

Pre-Lamped Sets Versus Custom Stringers

This is the real fork in the road for a commercial buyer, and either answer can be correct.

Pre-lamped sets arrive with bulbs installed at fixed spacing on fixed lengths. They install fastest, they are easiest to hand to a crew, and they are the right call when your runs are reasonably standard and you value speed on installation day.

Custom stringers are socket line you cut to length. Socket spools come in 500-foot lengths of 18 AWG SPT1 wire at six-, twelve-, or eighteen-inch socket spacing. You cut each run to the exact measured length, install bulbs, and add plug ends. On a commercial property with irregular spans, this eliminates the leftover tail and the awkward mid-run splice that makes a professional installation look amateur.

Standardize Color Temperature Across The Whole Property

On a house, a slight color mismatch between two sets is a minor annoyance. On a commercial property with several buildings, an entry monument, and a row of trees, it is the thing everyone notices and nobody can name.

Pick one white and specify it everywhere. Warm white at 2800K is the traditional choice and pairs naturally with brick, wood, and greenery. Cool white reads crisp and modern against glass and metal. The practical rule for commercial buying: order the full property's white in one order so it comes from consistent production, and order a spare box in the same white at the same time. A replacement set sourced in December from a different production run is exactly how a mismatch enters a display.

Size The Order, Then Size The Power

Measure every run individually, add ten percent for corners and drops, and total by bulb style. Then do the electrical math before you place the order, because power availability, not budget, is what usually constrains a commercial display.

A standard fifteen-amp circuit carries a working limit of about 1,440 watts. For reference on the incandescent side, a 7-watt C9 puts roughly 205 bulbs on that circuit, and a 5-watt C7 roughly 288. LED sets draw a small fraction of that, which is exactly why they dominate commercial work: far more linear feet per circuit and far fewer runs back to a panel. Whatever you buy, use the manufacturer's stated maximum connection count for end-to-end runs rather than estimating.

Walk the property and record which outlets are on which circuits, whether they are GFCI-protected, and whether they are switched. Then plan your runs to the power rather than planning the power to the runs. The arithmetic is worked through in how many lights fit on one circuit.

Budget accessories in the same order, not later: clips matched to your surfaces, electrical accessories, moisture protection for every outdoor junction, and timers so the display runs on schedule without a staff member handling it nightly.

Beyond The Roofline

Commercial properties usually need more than architectural outline lighting, because the display has to work for someone walking through it as well as someone driving past.

Wreaths and garland handle entries, columns, and interior common areas, and sizing and hanging guidance matters more at commercial scale, where an undersized wreath on a large facade looks smaller than it is. Plan The Timeline Backward From Installation Day

Work backward from the date the display needs to be lit. Most commercial properties want lights on the day after Thanksgiving, which puts installation in early-to-mid November, which puts delivery in October, which means the order goes in now.

Late August through September is the practical buying window. Selection is at its fullest around mid-September, and by mid-to-late November availability across the industry gets thin. A commercial order that arrives late does not simply arrive late; it takes crew scheduling, staging space, and an announced lighting date down with it.

The sequence that works: measure in August, specify and order in late August or September, receive and stage in October, install in early November. Every step you pull forward buys margin for the one thing you cannot control, which is weather on installation day.
