Incandescent Christmas Lights: How To Choose C7 And C9 Bulbs

LED took over the roofline years ago, and for good reason. But a real share of decorators still search for incandescent Christmas lights every year, and they are not confused shoppers. They want a specific look: the deep amber warmth of a heated filament behind triple-dipped glass, the way an old glass lens throws color onto siding, the tree their grandparents lit. That look is still available, and it is still worth buying on purpose.

This guide covers what you actually need to decide: C7 versus C9, transparent versus opaque glass, twinkle bulbs, how to build a custom line with a stringer, and how much of a circuit an incandescent run really uses. Everything below applies to the bulbs and stringers in our incandescent Christmas lights collection.

Why Anyone Still Chooses Incandescent

Three reasons come up over and over.

The color. An incandescent bulb makes light by heating a filament, so the light is continuous across the spectrum and reads warmer and softer than most LEDs. Combined with a triple-dipped glass lens, colors look saturated rather than electric. Reds look like cranberry instead of stoplight. Clear bulbs glow amber, not white.

Matching an existing display. If half your roofline is already incandescent C9 and you replace a section with LED, the mismatch is obvious from the street. Buying replacement bulbs in the same style keeps the run consistent.

Dimming. Incandescent C7 and C9 bulbs are dimmable on a standard dimmer. Many LED bulbs are not. If you run your display through a dimmer or a fade effect, incandescent is the simpler path.

What incandescent does not do well: it draws far more power per bulb, it runs hot, and the glass is breakable. Those tradeoffs decide most of the choices below.

C7 Or C9: Size, Base, And Watts

Both are the classic cone-shaped lens styles, and the difference is scale and socket.

  • C7 uses an E12 candelabra base and draws 5W per bulb. It is the smaller lens, at home on windows, columns, railings, mantels, doorway surrounds, and indoor trees.
  • C9 uses an E17 intermediate base and draws 7W per bulb. It is the larger lens, and it is what you want on a roofline, a fascia run, or anything viewed from the street.

The bases are not interchangeable, so the socket size on your stringer decides the bulb you buy. If you are starting from scratch and the run will be seen from the curb, start with C9. If it will be seen from the sidewalk or from inside the house, C7 is the better proportion.

Transparent Or Opaque Glass

This is the choice most people skip, and it changes the display more than the color name on the box does.

Transparent bulbs are triple-dipped colored glass you can see the filament through. Lit, they are brilliant and jewel-like, with a visible bright point inside the lens. Unlit in daylight, they look like colored glass.

Opaque bulbs are ceramic-coated. Lit, the whole lens glows evenly with no visible filament, which reads softer and more solid from a distance. Unlit, they look like painted bulbs, which some decorators prefer on a daytime roofline.

A practical rule: transparent for close-up sparkle and for multicolor runs where you want each bulb to pop, opaque for long roofline runs where you want a smooth, even line of color. Both are stocked across the color range in incandescent bulbs, including clear C9, multicolor C9, and single colors in red, green, blue, orange, yellow, teal, and white.

Twinkle Bulbs, And Where To Use Them

Incandescent twinkle bulbs have a bimetallic strip inside that interrupts the filament, so each bulb blinks on its own schedule. Nothing is synchronized and no controller is involved, which is exactly the point: the effect is random and organic instead of mechanical.

The mistake is using only twinkle bulbs. A full string of them looks restless. The approach that works is salting them into a steady run: one twinkle bulb every eighth or tenth socket gives the line quiet movement without turning the house into a blinking sign. Twinkle versions are available in clear, orange, red, blue, green, yellow, and multicolor, so you can match whatever the rest of the run is doing.

Build The Line Yourself With A Stringer

Pre-lamped sets are fine for a porch. For a roofline, a cut-to-length socket line is the better tool, and it is how professional installers work. A C7 or C9 socket spool is 500 feet of 18-gauge SPT1 wire with empty sockets at a fixed spacing. You cut the exact run you need, add slide-on vampire plugs at the ends, and lamp it with whatever bulbs you want.

Spacing choices matter:

  • 12 inch C9 spacing is the standard roofline look and the safest default.
  • 18 inch C9 spacing stretches coverage on long commercial runs and reads lighter from the street.
  • 6 inch spacing is dense, for wrapping columns, outlining doors, and close-up work.

Because the sockets are empty, one spool can be lamped incandescent this year and switched to LED later without rewiring. Add socket seals on outdoor runs — a rubber O-ring at each socket keeps water out of the connection, which is the single most common cause of mid-December failures.

Do The Power Math Before You Order

This is the part incandescent decorators cannot skip. A standard 15-amp household circuit at 120 volts gives you 1,800 watts, and the accepted working limit is 80 percent of that, or about 1,440 watts.

Run the numbers:

  • C9 at 7W: about 205 bulbs on one circuit at the 80 percent limit. At 12 inch spacing, that is roughly 200 feet of roofline.
  • C7 at 5W: about 288 bulbs, or roughly 288 feet at 12 inch spacing.

Two things follow. First, a large incandescent display needs more than one circuit, and you should know which outlets are on which breaker before installation day, not after. Second, do not daisy-chain long incandescent runs end to end the way you can with LED — the total load on the first plug is what matters. Splitting the house into zones with separate home runs back to different outlets is standard practice and it prevents both tripped breakers and voltage drop at the far end of a line.

If the math pushes you past what your outdoor circuits can carry, the practical answer is a hybrid: LED on the long roofline runs where the load adds up, incandescent where the light is seen up close and the character matters. Heat, Placement, And What Not To Do

Incandescent bulbs get hot in normal operation. That is not a defect, but it changes where they belong.

  • Keep them off dry natural greenery, paper, and fabric.
  • Give them air. Bulbs buried inside dense wreath foliage or wrapped tight under a bow trap heat.
  • Do not stuff an incandescent run inside a sealed plastic sleeve or under a covering.
  • On outdoor runs, point sockets down or seal them so meltwater cannot sit in the socket.

The heat also has a friendly use: it is what makes traditional bubble lights work. The C7 bulb inside each bubble light warms a sealed vial until it bubbles, which is why bubble lights are incandescent and always will be.

Buy Spares In The Same Order

Filaments fail. That is normal, and it is why incandescent bulbs come in packs of 25 rather than singles. One extra pack per color, bought with the original order, means a dark bulb in the middle of December is a two-minute fix instead of a shipping wait.

Two habits worth keeping: store bulbs lamped-out in their original packs rather than leaving them in the sockets all year, and swap the whole run's bulbs on the same schedule instead of one at a time, so brightness stays consistent across the line.

A Simple Way To Decide

Choose incandescent when the display is close to the viewer, when the warmth and depth of glass is the whole point, when you need to match bulbs already on the house, or when you want to dim. Choose LED when the run is long, the circuit is tight, or the lights will be climbed to and hung once for the whole decorating season.

Most serious displays end up with both, and that is the right answer. Start with the incandescent collection for the character pieces, build the long runs on a socket spool so you keep your options open, and order in August or early September while the full color range is on the shelf. The last new shipments of the year land early to mid September, and selection is at its best right after that.
