Christmas Around the World

While Christmas is celebrated around the world in many different ways, we can all agree that it is a magical time of year that brings out the best in us. In today’s post, we’re going to take you on an international tour that explains how Christmas is celebrated in several different countries.

Canada

Canada is a large and multinational country, which makes it difficult to talk about one specific way in which Christmas is celebrated. However, many elements of Christmas in Canada are very similar to those here in the United States. Canadians frequently decorate their yards with Christmas lights, and you’ll also find well-lit trees in their homes as well. Ukrainians are one of the largest segments of the Canadian population, and in keeping with Ukrainian tradition, many families will have a dinner featuring 12 meals that represent Jesus’ 12 apostles.

Japan

Christmas has been celebrated in Japan for several decades. There are not many Christians residing in Japan, so the holiday isn’t seen in the religious context that we’re familiar with here in the United States. Instead, Christmas is viewed as a time to spread happiness and goodwill to others. Christmas Eve is similar to Valentine’s Day in the United States — couples commonly go out to eat, exchange gifts, and celebrate their relationship together.

Believe it or not, KFC is one of the most popular Christmas dishes in Japan! A 1974 advertising campaign titled “Kentucky for Christmas!” was incredibly successful, and nearly 44 years later, KFC is one of the most popular restaurants on Christmas Day.

Chile

Many Chileans decorate their homes with Christmas lights and decorations depicting the Nativity, and you’ll also find LED Christmas lights in the most popular places in town. This is a fairly recent addition to Christmas in Chile, as many families could not afford them in previous decades. Christmas Eve is celebrated more than Christmas Day, with families and friends gathering together for a delicious meal.

Many families enjoy attending a Christmas Eve service after dinner, while others like to stay home to enjoy an evening with their loved ones. Everyone opens their presents at midnight, and it’s common for children to go to each other’s houses to show each other their new gifts. Christmas Day is generally relaxed, with many people close to the coast going to the beach for a day of relaxation with family and friends.

We’ve barely scratched the surface in this post, so keep an eye on our blog page in the coming weeks to learn even more about how Christmas is celebrated around the world. Christmas will be here before you know it, so make sure that you have all of the Christmas lighting supplies you need for the season!
