Everything You Need to Know About SPT1 and SPT2 Wire

SPT1 and SPT2 are two-conductor zipcord lamp wire — the raw material for building custom extension cords, stringer extensions, and light runs of any length. Pair with vampire plugs to create connections and replacement sockets to add C7 or C9 socket positions anywhere along the run. Available in green and white on 250’ and 500’ spools.

What’s in This Collection

18 AWG SPT1 Wire — Standard two-conductor zipcord. Available in 250’ and 500’ spools, green and white.

18 AWG SPT2 Wire — Heavier-gauge two-conductor zipcord with thicker insulation and higher load capacity. Available in 250’ and 500’ spools, green and white.

SPT1 vs. SPT2

Both are 18 AWG copper conductors, but SPT2 has significantly thicker insulation — making it more durable for outdoor installations and better suited to long runs and higher-load applications. Match your wire to the vampire plugs and sockets you’re using: SPT1 fittings for SPT1 wire, SPT2 fittings for SPT2 wire. Do not mix.

How to Choose

SPT-1 is a lighter-gauge wire suited for shorter runs and lighter-load strings, while SPT-2 is a heavier-gauge wire designed for longer runs or higher-load applications. Match the wire gauge to your existing strings and plugs to ensure safe, compatible connections. Choose the wire color — green or brown — that blends best with your installation environment.
