Throwing a Secret Santa Exchange

What Is a Secret Santa Exchange?

First things first — what’s a Secret Santa exchange?

As you can probably guess from the name, a Secret Santa exchange is a tradition in which people anonymously give each other gifts. They can be held as a standalone event, or you can incorporate them into an existing party to add another element of fun into the mix. Many people enjoy Secret Santa exchanges because they allow everyone involved to give and receive gifts without the obligation of buying something for everyone. In short, if you’re looking for a low-cost way to add even more cheer to the season, you can’t go wrong by organizing a Secret Santa!

Find a Date A photo of a calendar.

Before you can plan your exchange, you’ll need to find a date that works for everyone on your guest list. Keep in mind that December is one of the busiest months of the year and calendars tend to fill up quickly, so be sure to collaborate with all of your guests in advance so that you can get your party finalized.

Write Out Names

Now that you’ve set a date for your party, it’s time to figure out who will be shopping for whom. Start by writing everyone’s name on a slip of paper and place them in a bag or jar. Then, write out each guest’s name on a sheet of paper with space to record the name of the person they’ll be shopping for. Randomly draw pieces of paper and assign each name to another participant. Secretly inform everyone who they’ll be shopping for as a Secret Santa.

Shop Thoughtfully

Once you’ve assigned each participant to someone else, encourage everyone to shop thoughtfully for their recipient. Gift cards are always a safe choice, but they also aren’t particularly exciting. If you’re organizing a Secret Santa among your close friends and family members, then finding a fun and thoughtful gift should be fairly straightforward. If you’re organizing one at your workplace or with people you aren’t too familiar with, it’s never a bad idea to have each person write down a few of their hobbies and interests. No matter how you decide to go about this step of the process, we recommend setting a spending limit so that nobody is left feeling uncomfortable.

Throw the Party!

You’ve planned, shopped, and looked forward to this day for several weeks — it’s time to throw the party! If you’re hosting the party at your home, hanging LED Christmas lights in different areas can be a great way to create a fun and merry atmosphere. Check out our catalog for a few great ideas!

There are a couple of different ways to go about opening gifts, but we’re only going to cover the two most popular in this guide. On the one hand, everyone can open their gift and try to guess who their Secret Santa was. If they’re right, you can give out additional prizes or treats! If you’d like to keep things completely anonymous, that’s just fine, too! While it can be fun to reveal who everyone was shopping for, there’s certainly a case to be made for leaving an element of mystery in the air.

Other Ideas A picture of Santa holding a blank list.

The Christmas season is a joyous time of the year for most, but it can also be a time of hardship and sorrow for others. If your budget allows and your guests are willing, consider purchasing secret Santa gifts along with gifts that help the less fortunate. There are plenty of local organizations that help children and families in need, so if you’re interested, do your research and find a cause that everyone in your party can get behind.
