Buyer Help

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for choosing, sizing, and installing C9 Christmas lights.

What are C9 Christmas lights?

C9 bulbs are the larger, traditional Christmas light — the classic strawberry-shaped bulb that's been a staple of American holiday displays for decades. They're roughly 2.5 inches tall and produce a bold, unmistakable glow that's visible from the street.

What are C9 lights best used for?

Rooflines, primarily. C9s are the go-to choice for outlining the roofline and ridgeline of your home because their larger size creates clean, defined lines visible from a distance. They are also excellent for lining driveways, walkways, and fence tops where you want maximum presence.

How do I figure out how many C9 bulbs I need for my roofline?

Measure your roofline in feet, then divide by the bulb spacing on the stringer you're using. Most C9 stringers use 12-inch spacing, so a 100-foot roofline needs roughly 100 sockets. Always add 10–15% for corners, peaks, and connection points.

What's the difference between C9 LED bulbs and traditional incandescent C9s?

LED C9 bulbs use a fraction of the energy, run cool to the touch, and hold up significantly longer than incandescent. Modern LED C9s also produce rich, saturated color that rivals the old-school look.

Should I buy pre-lamped C9 light strings or build my own with empty socket wire?

It depends on the scale of your display. Pre-lamped strings are plug-and-go and ideal for straightforward rooflines. Empty socket wire with individual bulbs gives you full control over spacing, color patterns, and total string length.

Can I use C9 Christmas lights outdoors?

Absolutely. C9 lights from The Christmas Light Emporium are rated for outdoor use and engineered to handle rain, snow, and freezing temperatures.

Are your C9 lights commercial grade?

Yes. Our C9 bulbs and stringers are the same professional-grade products used by commercial installers, municipalities, and event venues.

What's the difference between smooth and faceted C9 LED bulbs?

Smooth C9 LEDs produce a clean, modern glow similar to a ceramic-coated incandescent. Faceted C9 LEDs refract light through a textured lens for a sparkling, multidimensional effect.

How bright are C9 LED bulbs compared to incandescent?

LED C9 bulbs are comparable in perceived brightness to traditional incandescent C9s, but they distribute light more evenly across the bulb surface for a consistent, saturated glow.

Can I mix C9 bulb colors on the same stringer?

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of using empty socket wire with individual C9 bulbs is that you can create custom color patterns on the same run.

What's the difference between C7 and C9 bulbs for rooflines?

C9 bulbs are larger and bolder, which makes them the standard choice for roofline outlining. C7 bulbs are smaller and work better for smaller homes or more delicate accent work.

What kind of clips do I need to hang C9 lights on my roofline?

That depends on your roof type. Shingle tabs work for standard asphalt shingles, all-in-one clips work for gutters, and specialized clips are available for tile, metal, and flat roofs.

Are C9 ProCore® bulbs dimmable?

Steady-on C9 ProCore® bulbs are dimmable. Twinkle and RGB color-changing variants may not be compatible with dimmers.

What base does C9 use?

Intermediate E17 base — standard for C9 stringers.

Do C9 sets come with bulbs included?

No — ProCore® sets include the stringer and bulbs separately. Screw the bulbs into the stringer sockets.

What's the Reindeer Proof™ Warranty?

Our in-house warranty covers manufacturing defects and performance failures. Duration varies by product, so check the individual product page for exact coverage.

Everything You Need to Know About C9 Christmas Lights

C9 LED Christmas lights from The Christmas Light Emporium use an intermediate E17 screw base — the larger of the two standard outdoor bulb sizes and the industry standard for rooflines, gutters, and large-scale architectural outlines. The C9 bulb is larger and more visible at a distance than C7, making it the dominant choice for professional and DIY roofline displays.

C9 Use Cases

Rooflines and gutters: C9 is the industry standard for running lights along rooflines, gutters, and fascia — the larger bulb is clearly visible from the street.

Architectural outlines: Windows, doorways, peaks, dormers, and other architectural features where a defined light outline is the goal.

Note on outdoor tree wrapping: Outdoor tree wrapping is typically done with 5mm string lights — not C9. C9 is occasionally used around tree canopies for a modern visual effect, but this is not its primary use case.

C9 vs. C7 — Which Do I Need?

C9 (E17 intermediate base) is larger than C7 (E12 candelabra base). C9 is the standard for rooflines and large architectural outlines where maximum bulb visibility at a distance matters. C7 is well suited for indoor trees and smaller-scale architectural details.

Faceted vs. Smooth ProCore®

Faceted bulbs have a multi-faceted surface that catches and scatters light. Smooth bulbs have a clean, rounded finish for a uniform glow. Both available across the full color range.

How to Choose

C9 lights are the go-to choice for rooflines, gutters, fences, and architectural outlines where a large, bold bulb reads clearly at a distance. Choose between LED and incandescent based on your energy and longevity preferences — LED options run cooler and last longer. Measure your roofline footage before selecting a string length, and choose a color or multicolor combination that complements your display.
