Determine How Many Lights You Need
Every great display begins with a quick calculation of how many lights are needed. You don’t want to end up with so many Christmas lights that you end up having extras, but you also don’t want to end up with only half of your home lit up! Measure around the perimeter of your home if you’re uncomfortable climbing on a ladder — all you really need is a general idea of the length required to cover your home. For reasons we’ll explain below, you’ll want to purchase Christmas light clips as well.
If you’re planning to wrap your trees with LED Christmas lights, then be sure to pick up several more sets of Christmas string lights, depending on how tall your trees are. You should also consider purchasing Christmas net lights for your bushes!
Start Your Display!
Now that you’ve determined the number of lights you’ll need to create your display, it’s time to get to work! Start by taking care of everything on the ground — wrap your trees, bushes, and set up all of your Christmas displays first. Hanging your lights from your roof is almost always more time consuming, so it’s generally better to save that project for last. When you are ready to begin hanging your lights, be sure that you have your Christmas light clips ready to go, as these will protect both you and your home. Many people use staples or nails to hang their Christmas lights and decorations. However, in addition to harming your home, these materials can also puncture the cables and put your home at risk of a fire. Here are a few more safety tips for hanging your lights:
- Purchase a sturdy ladder: This point is basic, but often ignored. You may have a ladder that was handed down to you from a parent, or perhaps you’ve had one sitting in the back of your garage for decades. If your ladder is old and outdated, then it’s time to invest in a new, sturdier model. Your safety is of the utmost importance when you’re hanging your LED Christmas lights, so don’t skimp on the hardware that’s holding you several feet above the ground!
- Practice good ladder safety: Now that you’ve got a sturdy ladder, you need to ensure that you’ve minimized the risk of a falling. Make sure that the ground beneath the ladder isn’t wet or covered in ice, and do your best to make sure that the entire structure is level. Never climb above the second step from the top, as anywhere above this point can become unstable. Finally, always face the ladder — stepping off to move the ladder is much safer than turning around and trying to reach a far-off area.
- Be mindful of your lights’ location: Never wrap your lights around an outdoor air conditioning unit or around another area that generates heat. Although your LED Christmas lights do not emit enough heat to cause a fire, the same cannot be said for other appliances, vents, and regular outdoor lighting.
